Online College Applications

 Online College Applications

Applying to colleges online is common. Some colleges even require online applications.  Tech-savvy students will feel more comfortable applying online. There are two ways that online applications are handled.  One, is that the school (or system in the case of state schools) has its own unique application.  Two, the school may use the Web-based Common Application that is used by various schools, nationwide. ( You can find it at:  http://www.commonapp.org )

It does not matter which way you apply as long as the college doesn’t specifically state that they do not accept paper applications.

Students who frequently use email and texting to communicate may write their online applications in their usual email language. Online applications are formal academic documents, and your writing tone needs to reflect that fact.  That means no abbreviations or emoticons, and a well-proofread essay. It may seem obvious to some, but to others this is a revelation. Treat your college application like an employment application.

Remember, your application is often the only interaction you have with those who make the ultimate decision.  Would you show up to an interview without showering and in day old clothes?  Didn’t think so, so be sure that your application presents the freshly showered and pressed persona you are trying to project to the school you want to attend.
